Our honeybee's body is carved from fossilized walrus tusk, which has lain in the earth for some 500 to 3,000 years. There minerals color it rich and variegated shades of honey to deep cocoa brown. After erosion exposes it, Native peoples gather the fossilized walrus ivory for carving, sale, or trade. It is an important part of their history and their indigenous economy.
